CLIFTON, Ohio — For more than three decades, families from across the country have flocked to the Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill, a time-honored holiday spectacle known for its dazzling display of twinkling lights and festive charm. Recognized in 2018 on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” and taking top honors in the Heavyweight Division, this landmark event has only grown more luminous, setting a new milestone with 5 million lights in 2024.
A Dazzling Display and Holiday Milestone
What began as a modest effort—just a handful of lights strung around the historic mill—has transformed into one of the largest outdoor holiday shows in the nation. The shimmering display now illuminates the mill, trees, riverbanks, and even the water wheel, instantly creating a Christmas wonderland when the lights switch on. Gates open at 5 p.m. daily, with the lights shining from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $15, and children 3 and under are free.
“We don’t rest on our laurels,” said co-owner Anthony Satariano, who earned the mill’s top recognition on national television. “My staff calls me nuts, but I sit at the very top of the mill’s roof—safely strapped in, of course—and envision new ways to make it even better each year. I get that eye roll from General Manager Jessica Noes and the staff, and then we’re off and running.”
More Than Just Lights
The covered bridge’s synchronized light-and-music show, held hourly, remains one of the biggest crowd-pleasers. In addition, Clifton Mill showcases a meticulously crafted miniature village that has expanded annually for 37 years. It includes miniatures of historic Clifton buildings, a working outdoor train, a 1950s drive-in theater, a county fair, a firefighting scene, and countless other tiny details that captivate visitors of all ages.
Inside the Santa Collection exhibit, over 3,000 representations of Saint Nick date back as far as 1850. Meanwhile, a real-life Santa can be spotted hard at work in his workshop—and, if you’re lucky, making a surprise appearance atop the chimney.
Holiday Treats and Family Atmosphere
No visit to the Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill would be complete without their world-famous hot chocolate. Guests can also find hot dogs, snacks, and other beverages to enjoy as they stroll through the twinkling display. The entire event is outdoors and weather-dependent, so visitors are encouraged to dress accordingly and wear comfortable walking shoes.
